Who?

DJ BJ LIVE, born Burton Jerome, is a Miami-based hip-hop/open-format DJ.

Early Life.

He first discovered the turntables very young at his dad’s event venue, Marcus Hall in Queens, NY. Everytime he was there he couldn’t help but gravitate to the DJ room. He would play some his favorite records from his dad’s collection such as “Thriller” from Michael Jackson, and “Limb by Limb” by Cutty Ranks to pass the time. Crazy enough, BJ was able to power on a full DJ system and play records on his own, but still was learning the ABCs and the challenges of riding a bike without training wheels. Employees at the hall noticed his joy in music and began calling him “DJ BJ” jokingly, and it just stuck. During parties and functions at the hall, BJ always paid attention to the DJs and unconsciously began taking mental notes of what songs work for certain occasions and those that don’t. Collecting and playing music was always a fun hobby for BJ growing up but never a serious career decision until much later in life.

Finding Himself.

Bright in school, he was able to get a scholarship and attended the University of Central Florida. But there was one problem. He didn’t know what he was doing there. Because of this he initially studied business, but the only business he was taking part of was partying. He quickly went from attending college parties to DJing them, then promoting his own within the first couple years in school. He also started doing mixtapes and began to make a name for himself in the city. Mixtape after mixtape he grew his following and became one of the biggest up and coming college DJs. With DJing taking the attention, the academics slipped and before you know it he was out of school and out of a scholarship. He found employment at Sprint to help pay the bills and did weekend gigs but hated the retail life. He felt out of place working for other people, dealing with the pettiness of the retail environment, and felt he should be doing what he loved full time. In 2013, he started Shut Down Productions, a DJ company providing entertainment for corporate clients and weddings. Between the business, club gigs, and his day job he was doing ok but day by day knew he was wasting time not fulfilling his purpose in life keeping his day job. He knew his future was at stake and that he needed to make a big change, and quickly, to chase this DJ dream and pursue happiness.

The Move.

no time to waste.

In 2014, he took a blind leap of faith and moved to Miami, FL. Having absolutely no connections or friends in the city, this move was a huge risk but the atmosphere of wealth and the high party population attracted him and made it feel like the place to reset and make a DJ career a reality. He transferred the Sprint job initially and hustled and networked on the weekends to try to get gigs. Being in a new city meant he had to abandon the fanbase he took years to build in Orlando and start fresh. With time not being on his side, he decided to pursue a career in radio for a jump-start. He attended Connecticut School of Broadcasting and graduated with flying colors. In the summer of 2015, he was selected from a pool of hundreds of DJs to compete in the Power 96 Mixmaster DJ Competition. He became a finalist in the competition and although he didn’t take the title he gained great exposure in the market and soon found an internship at WMIB 103.5 The Beat. The Beat noticed his drive and talent and soon gave him his first opportunities to DJ on air, while still completing the internship! His weekend hustles and networking also eventually paid off by landing him his first weekly residency at Mokai in south beach. From there, he began getting calls for other parties and quickly he had nights at top hot spots such as Rockwell, Rec Room, Icon (Mansion), Heart and more.

In December 2016, he was picked up by WEDR 99 Jamz as on-air talent and is now working hard to become the next big thing in radio. When he’s not at the station, you can catch him in some of the hottest clubs in Miami or working private gigs through his company, Shut Down Productions. The grind is far from over for this young entrepreneur as he still works relentlessly to grow and build his brand in the industry.
